The precise measurement of $N_eff$ at the time of CMB formation by Planck 2018 can be used to understand fundamental interactions and to shed light on beyond standard model (BSM) scenarios. In this talk I will explain how N_eff can probe light (MeV) freeze in dark matter models which contain additional neutrino injection at late time. We propose a scenario where a long lived scalar decays to a dark matter and active neutrinos after BBN. Despite the feeble coupling of DM the parameter space can be probed via N_eff. I will also talk about how N_eff at CMB can constrain light Z' gauge boson realized in generic BSM U(1)_X scenarios. Title: Reaching beneath the surface: Gravitational-wave Background search methods, targets, and implications: Abstract: "Gravitational-wave backgrounds (GWBs) encompass a multitude of signals across the wide gravitational-wave (GW) frequency spectrum, and represent key targets in the panorama of gravitational-wave data analysis. Typically, GWBs are considered to be the collection of GW signals that lie just beneath the threshold of detection. In this talk, I will broadly introduce GWBs and various ongoing or near-future detection efforts, focusing on ground-based interferometers such as LIGO and Virgo. I will specifically focus on the astrophysical GWB from binary black holes and neutron stars, as it is expected to be the main background source in the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA (LVK) frequency range. I will describe the flagship LVK GWB searches and outline their key implications beyond GWs: The GWB power spectrum includes information on binary formation history and mass distribution, while its angular power spectrum is a tracer of large-scale structure, and many other potential sky distributions. I will present two new and improved GWB searches I am involved in, which are expected to outperform current approaches and which we plan to apply to O4 data. Finally, I will close with an overview of the future of GWBs with promising new detectors such as LISA and 3G interferometers." Dear all, From Monday 19th February to the wednesday 21th, we will receive Ville Vaskonen who has worked a lot in the fields of early universe phase transitions and black holes phenomenology. Do not hesitate to pass by our offices if you want to discuss with him. He will give a talk on Tuesday the 20th at 14:00 in the Sancton room: Black holes and gravitational waves from slow phase transitions The Universe may have deviated from the radiation-dominated expansion during the earliest epochs and the processes causing that can have interesting observable consequences. In this talk, I will focus on strongly supercooled phase transitions that cause a secondary period of exponential expansion of the Universe. I will describe a class of particle physics models where such transitions can happen and discuss the observable consequences of the process in the form of gravitational waves (GWs) and primordial black holes (PBHs). I will show that if the transition is slow the GW signal generated by colliding bubble walls and fluid shells can be very strong and potentially gives a good fit to the GW background recently discovered in the pulsar timing array data. I will also show that such slow transitions lead to the formation of a large PBH abundance that can constitute all dark matter and a secondary GW signal that dominates over the signal formed by the bubble walls and fluid shells if the transition is sufficiently slow. Dear all, We are happy to announce the seminar of Thursday 14/12 by Sokratis Trifinopoulos (MIT) in the Sancton Room at 12.30. Sokratis will talk about "PTA gravitational waves and James Webb early galaxies: from Primordial Black Holes to Axion Clusters. " Abstract: Recent observations have granted to us two unique insights into the early universe: the presence of a low-frequency stochastic gravitational wave background detected by the NANOGrav and Pulsar Timing Array (PTA) experiments and the emergence of unusually massive galaxy candidates at high redshifts reported by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). In this talk, I will consider the possibility that both observations have a common origin. First, I will scrutinize primordial black holes (PBHs) in the mass range between 106 and 1013 solar masses. While superheavy PBHs act as seeds of accelerated galaxy formation capable of explaining the JWST extreme galaxies, they can also form binary mergers that source gravitational waves which can be potentially identified as the PTA signal. The analysis is performed taking into account the constraints on the relevant region of the PBH parameter space including the novel bound imposed by the so-called Ultraviolet Luminosity Function (UV LF) of galaxies observed by the Hubble Space Telescope. Then, I will discuss minicluster seeds in the initial axion density field due to the decay of the axion string network in the post-inflationary scenario. For axions heavier than 10-25 eV , the resulting clusters have a significant impact on large-scale structure, which is also strictly constrained by the UV LF. One notable illustration is given by the axion miniclusters. Emerging within a scenario where axions are produced after inflation, these structures consist of axions bound by gravitational forces, with a mass close to the one of the Moon with the radius of the Sun. Given that they would form as early as during the matter-radiation equality epoch, the initial population of axion miniclusters is subjects to many effects that alter, damage and even destroy them. We study how those structures would survive once they become bound in the galaxy and start interacting with stars. Finally, we show the typical signal in experiment we should expect once one of them encounter the Earth. We also study the new potential signal of gravitational waves from PTAs. First, from a numerical-relativity approach, with a focus on the emitted gravitational waves and a comparison to the standard binary black hole (BBH) case. Then, I will touch upon the spin-induction effect these black holes undergo when the encounters are close enough, discussing the consequences this has for the field of primordial black holes. Here the webpage of the event: https://indico.iihe.ac.be/event/1797/ Yann will talk about: Title: Primordial black holes from supercooled phase transition and implications for Pulsar Timing Arrays Abstract: Cosmological first-order phase transitions are said to be supercooled when the nucleation temperature is much smaller than the critical temperature. They are typical of potentials which feature nearly scale-invariance, for which the bounce action decreases only logarithmically with time. The phase transition takes place slowly and the probability distribution of bubble nucleation time is maximally spread. Hubble patches which get percolated later than the average are hotter than the background after reheating and potentially collapse into primordial black holes (PBH). In the first part of the talk, I will discuss the formation of PBH by supercooled phase transitions. In the second part, I will discuss the search for supercooled phase transitions in pulsar timing arrays and how it affects the search for PBH in LIGO-Virgo. Yann will be visiting us from Tuesday to Friday, so there will be plenty of time for discussions. Hello everyone, next JC this Friday (exceptional date) at 2pm. Martina will talk about non-thermal leptogenesis and her master project. Abstract: In this talk, we intend to provide an alternative path to the standard thermal leptogenesis mainly studied in the literature, focusing on the possibility to source non-thermal leptogenesis via decays of ALPs. We estimate the contribution of this non-thermal ALP leptogenesis and compute it by solving the associated Boltzmann equations, assuming that the species involved are in kinetic equilibrium. The advantages of this alternative approach are that, while standard leptogenesis would undergo strong washout at the temperatures of interest for our mechanism, our non-thermal leptogenesis via ALP decays avoids this, and the secondary non-thermal population of $N$, produced via ALP decays, would fuel leptogenesis, enhancing the resulting baryon asymmetry. Here, we confront the GREA theory against the latest cosmological data, including type Ia supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillations, the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation, Hubble rate data from the cosmic chronometers and the recent $H_0$ measurements. We perform Markov Chain Monte Carlo analyses and a Bayesian model comparison, by estimating the evidence via thermodynamic integration, and find that when all the aforementioned data are included, but no prior on $H_0$, the difference in the log-evidence is $\\sim -9$ in favor of GREA, thus resulting in overwhelming support for the latter over the cosmological constant and cold dark matter model ($Λ$CDM). Here we analyze the conditions for collapse of a star of degenerate neutrons in the presence of entropy production due to the gravitational collapse itself. We find that the final mass and radius of the neutron star differs from that obtained with the adiabatic Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation by a factor of order 15\\%. We also find that the minimum mass of a neutron star is $\\sim 1.1\\,M_\\odot$ and the maximum mass around $2.4\\,M_\\odot$. We discuss the possible implications for the search and interpretation of binary coalescing systems like neutron stars and neutron star-black holes detectable via their multimessenger (gravitational and electromagnetic wave) emission upon merging. arxiv.org I hope to see you there, Best, Miguel

Diego Redigolo (Firenze University). He will visit jointly VUB and ULB from 22 to 26 May. Diego is a long-term collaborator of mine about pheno aspects of SUSY. He is working now on cosmological perturbations, and he will give a talk on such topic on Thursday or Friday of that week. Yann Gouttenoire (Tel Aviv University). He will visit us from 26 to 30 June. Dear All, tomorrow there will be construction works in front of the IIHE, on the side of the office of Kevin/Alba/Hannah. The noise should be present only in the morning, but most probably it will go a bit on also in the afternoon. The visitor Fabrizio Rompineve will be around all day and give us a talk about "GW signatures at PTA", blackboards plus slides, at 14:00 https://indico.iihe.ac.be/event/1716/ <https://indico.iihe.ac.be/event/1716/> Given the constructions, there are two options: 1) If the noise on our side (esplanade) is ok, then I propose I can host Kevin/Alba/Hannah/Xander in our offices (and in our seminar room). The seminar then will go on in the small seminar room (1G012) as planned. 2) If the noise is too strong also on our side (esplanade), than we will all move on the 9th floor, building F, where we will have access to some office common space. Thanks a lot to Nina and Alex for making this possible. The seminar will then go on into the small seminar room of the 9F. Tomorrow morning when I will arrive (9:30), I will see what will be the best option, either 1 or 2.
