Dear all, For the upcoming unit meeting I am sending my paper titled “The Operationalisation of Impartiality within Public Service Media Newsrooms. Researching Practices in a Cross-Media Environment at the VRT.” To briefly contextualise the article: it was written in April for the RIPE conference, specializing on Public Service Media research and it is based on a preliminary analysis of the interviews I conducted between January and February at the VRT. Since then I have not been able to update it where necessary as I was focusing on another policy article (which I decided not to send as this article is closer to the expertise of the unit) and on analysing interviews conducted at the RAI between March and April on the same topic. Regarding the status of the article: for the upcoming months I won’t be able to work on it due to another deadline, but I aim to start with updating it and prepare it for submission from January onwards. It could still develop in many ways: either into its own article with a focus on the VRT; be integrated with the RAI analysis; or divided depending on focus (e.g. definitions of impartiality vs. narratives of practices). In whichever case, the journal I had in mind with this publication was Journalism Practice due to the heavy focus on journalistic roles and practices (suggestions about alternatives are of course very welcome). The NeFCA Journalism division invites doctoral students to submit their proposals for a PhD Workshop hosted at the Etmaal van de Communicatiewetenschappen Conference 2025 in Bruges. This workshop aims to connect up-and-coming journalism researchers with experienced colleagues in the field. The colloquium will take place on Monday February 3 between 9:30 and 11:30 (before the start of the main conference) in Meeting room 2 (3rd floor) at The Bruges Meeting & Convention Centre (BMCC). Participants will get the opportunity to present their PhD projects and receive detailed feedback from senior scholars working on related topics. We welcome all theoretical and empirical PhD projects focusing on journalism research. Submissions can take the form of a working draft of a paper or they can present the theoretical framework, research plan or a specific chapter of the PhD project. We strongly support submissions from PhD candidates at the beginning or in the middle of their project as they benefit from feedback the most. Interested PhD students should submit the following: * An abstract of 500 words outlining the 1) topic, 2) rationale, 3) theoretical approach, and 4), if applicable, empirical application, * Practical information: name, affiliation, expected graduation date and supervisor(s), * Please provide a list of two potential respondents affiliated with a university in Belgium or the Netherlands who are likely to attend the conference and whom you would like to receive feedback from (excluding your supervisors or close colleagues). Koen Leurs is an Associate Professor in Gender, Media and Migration Studies at the Graduate Gender Program, Department of Media and Culture, Utrecht University, the Netherlands. Doing digital migration studies: pluralizing understandings In contemporary discussions on migration, digital technology is often considered as a ‘smart’ disruptive tool used by governments to surveil and protect borders while monitoring the movement of people in more efficient ways. However, the story about is more complex. Migration and technology can be said to co-shape one another: migration is a site of technological innovation, and migration is deeply digitally mediated. Koen Leurs, in his recent book Digital Migration<https://uk.sagepub.com/en-gb/eur/digital-migration/book269996> (Sage, 2023), and open access volume Doing digital migration studies<https://www.jstor.org/stable/jj.11895524> (co-edited with Sandra Ponzanesi, Amsterdam University Press, 2024) draws out the complex, multilayered relationship between migration and digital technologies. Using an inter-disciplinary approach and covering case studies from the Global North as well as the Global South, Koen Leurs seeks to draw out the contradictions, tensions and hopes that characterize digital migration dynamics. From the critical role that digital infrastructures play in migration management to migrants’ use of devices, platforms and networks to connect and thrive, from the power of digital representations of migrants (and how these can be contested), pre-digital histories to the emotional realities of transnational families, Leurs invites scholars to pluralize understandings of migration and mobility in our contemporary world. In his talk, Koen Leurs will address commitments and challenges of doing digital migration studies. This is a rather advanced draft, so I don’t expect, at this stage, to make enormous changes, but I obviously welcome very much your suggestions around: * Internal coherence: how do the different sections of the lit rev stick together and how does the lit rev relates to the empirical analysis and the theoretical contribution? * Clarity of the concepts used and usefulness for explaining the empirical material. Am I missing some concepts/theories/literature that I could consider for such reflections? * Depth and originality of the theoretical reflections? Anything else I should work on? Hi everyone, Attached to this email you’ll find the first draft of the article Daniel, Ike and I are currently working on, titled ‘Navigating the news: How young adults perform news curation practices on Instagram and TikTok’. To provide you some context: The article reports a first empirical ‘test’ study of the data mirroring method (a combination of social media data donations and in-depth interviews) we are currently developing. Theoretically and conceptually, the study draws on my PhD project which uses the lens of ‘curation practices’ to analyze how social media news users encounter and organize their news and information flows, aiming to understand which roles news audiences (still) assign to journalistic sources. To also give you a timeframe, the paper is a first draft-version which we are planning to submit after the summer break (mid-august). Feedback on any aspect of the paper is more than welcome, but it would be particularly helpful to focus a bit on: * The alignment of the theoretical framework, the methodology, and the findings: is the literature review a logical framework from which the methodology and findings emerge? * The overall outline of the paper: is the structure of the paper clear? Does it make sense? Are the steps we made logical? * In what journal we should submit the paper. Thank you already for the effort, we are looking forward to the discussion! We are particularly interested in researchers who rely on digital data about people, including data collected from websites, social media platforms, mobile devices, APIs, and similar data that might be generated through digital interaction and available for computational analysis. The purpose of this study is understand how researchers from different academic communities use digital data about people, to assess their current preparedness to address any data ethics issues in their work, and to identify opportunities for additional educational outreach & resource development.
