Hi everyone, Attached to this e-mail you can find the draft of the paper on ‘cultural mediators’ that I am currently working on together with Ike. To provide some context, the paper should be almost finished, and we plan to submit it (hopefully 😊) next week. We were considering submitting the paper to ‘Media, Culture, and Society’ which seems to cover similar paper topics (but feedback on our choice of journal is more than welcome). The paper is part of my PhD project which is not only looking at the relationship of young media users towards cultural mediators (as presented in this paper) but also uses ‘personal curation tactics’ as a lens to analyse how media users encounter political information aiming to understand how youngsters cope with the intertwining of voices with different status (journalistic versus non-journalistic) on social media platforms. Feedback on any aspect of the paper is more than welcome, but it would be particularly helpful to focus a bit on: * The outline of the paper: are the research questions, the design, and the aim of the paper clear? Is the structure well-defined? * Is the paper ‘complete’ and ready for publication, or is there something (essential) missing? * Are the steps we made in the study logical and clear? * Do the findings align with the theoretical framework? Where existing explanations of Fox's appeal have stressed the network's conservative editorial slant, Dr. Reece Peck sheds light on the importance of its style as a generative mode of ideology. In addition to tracing Fox’s historical ascendancy, this talk compares the conservative cable giant with the progressive YouTube-based network the Young Turks (TYT). TYT stands as one of YouTube’s longest-running and most successful “news and politics” channels on the platform. This talk stresses the importance of style as an analytical category for studying modern news branding and political movements and argues that there is no inherent connection between media populism and political conservatism — even though today, thanks to US conservative media, many conflate the two. Personal biography Reece Peck<https://reecepeck.com/> is an Associate Professor teaching at the CUNY Graduate Center and is the author of Fox Populism: Branding Conservatism as Working Class<https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/fox-populism/fox-populism/7B808F481B5E…> (Cambridge, 2019). His research uses concepts and methods from sociology, political science, and media studies to examine populist rhetorical styles, partisan news, and tabloid media. In addition to providing commentary for outlets such as the New York Times, the Washington Post, and Vice TV, Peck was among a select group of media scholars asked to provide written testimony to the Congressional Investigatory Committee on the January 6 Capitol riot.

Unit meetings

Dear all, I hope you are all doing well. As the new academic year kicks off, let's do the same with the NUSE unit meetings. These would be the dates for the first semester, 15.30 to 17h (with potential for drinks afterwards): - 28/09 - 26/10 - 23/11 December will already be rather full with end of year diner and so on, and so we'll look for new meetings from January on. Next meeting will be dedicated to some updates and a discussion of the insights from the wellbeing survey. We will then also look who has upcoming papers to discuss in the next to editions in order to continue our paper feedback rounds. See you all soon! Ike

Dear SMIT’ers of the second floor, Some may have noticed, some were already contacted directly, some already saw me crawling under a desk, … Project clean desk – clean office is going strong, and I aim to finish the second floor by the end of the summer. Nuse unit moved to the right wing of the SMIT side on the second floor. PL9.2.13 Antonis’ office PL9.2.14 + PL9.2.17 Unit dedicated offices ex-DPE unit – Ana and Ine moved to across the hallway. PL9.2.18 All Telco spaces are emptied the past half year. PL9.2.01 + PL9.2.10 + PL9.2.09 + PL9.2.08 Pieter’s office has been tackled earlier this year. PL9.2.11 We’re halfway in MEP dedicated offices clean-up. PL9.2.05 + PL9.2.06 – emptied and ready to be used. I encountered some closed cabinets and drawer units. Please label yours, so I know it’s still used. For example: at PL9.2.06 there is a closed cabinet nobody knows from whom it is, so please if you have the key or know who has it, please let me know. I’ll ask in SMIT general chat as well, but by the end of next week, without further notice, I’ll break the lock. Dear all, Belgium is taking the presidency of the EU first half 24. They are organising a lot of conferences. "Can you help us get interesting leads? People who have something to say, texts/files we should bring, reports with trends, ...? " they asked. Goal: Identify problems/challenges/opportunities of media digitisation, and together with panel discussions, key notes, debates show alternatives/solutions/show need to policy. Is conference mainly driven by EU Commission. Main themes: AI/ VR/ disinformation/ game tech/ immersive journalism/ data abuse. So anything to do with digitisation of media. Now especially Chat GPT/Bard is hot, but in the next few years the game sector is going to make innovative leaps that will completely revolutionise the future of media, news coverage, and our way of perceiving media. Comments of any kind are welcome, keep in mind that my deadline is 15th July, so I can still do quite a lot of edits. I’d particularly appreciate comments related to: * the connection between the theoretical framework, the RQ and the discussion of the findings (do you see a smooth connection between what I anticipate in the TF, what I find and how TF and findings ‘talk’ to each other in light of the RQ?) * the clarity/soundness of the methodology and how the execution of the method reflects into the discussion section * the clarity of key terms and concepts * the relative ‘weight’ of the different sections: should ‘discussion’ be longer? Good morning, everyone, As promised, attached to this email, you will find the first complete draft of the paper on Alex Jones for a special issue on ‘Cancel Culture and Digital Platforms’ for Television and New Media (you can find the call here<https://call-for-papers.sas.upenn.edu/cfp/2022/07/20/digital-platforms-and-….>). The official deadline for submission is the 30th of June, leaving quite some time to reflect and incorporate your feedback. While you are, of course, free to mention anything that strikes you, I also wanted to offer some suggestions: * What do you think about the interpretations that we draw from the findings? Anything you disagree with or results that you see as indicative of something other than what is currently mentioned? * Following the previous point, the literature review section is still in development, as it works back from the findings and seeks to combine the role of the ‘ideological entrepreneur’ with insights from ‘fandom studies’ and ‘small acts of engagement’. Is the overall line of this argumentation clear? Is there anything missing here that helps to understand the findings? * Ike suggested that perhaps a valuable angle for a broader discussion within the unit is the application of the concept ‘small acts of engagement’ (which has been anonymized for peer review). What do you think about the application of the concept to the current study, and are there certain additions that can help further theorize or illiterate the concept? * Finally, the paper has around 7000 words, and the final version, including references, cannot exceed 5000 words.
