For the forthcoming NUSE meeting, I’m happy to share the theoretical framework and literature review sections of the paper I am currently working on as part of the INEQNEWS project. The abstract for this was accepted at ICA, and I will be presenting the paper (in full) there later this year. In this paper, I try to bridge three literatures: journalism studies, sociology, and digital inequalities. The overarching goals of the paper are three-fold: One, to explore whether the news consumption as a whole is more commonly associated with social classes that engage in ‘highbrow’ cultural activities (e.g., going to the museum, art exhibitions etc.), and its implications. Second, we make an original contribution to the journalism studies by introducing a “Status Demonstration” scale i.e., a scale that measures whether news consumption can be perceived as a tool to demonstrate one’s social status. Third, we investigate whether such status demonstration attitudes towards the news are more prevalent within participants that engage in “high culture” and greater social class. The paper is currently still being written, and some parts may read quite sociology-heavy. The goal is to situate theories from sociology (Bourdieu) and digital inequalities to the field of journalism studies. Antonis and Courtney have already highlighted to me the areas that need reworking, but please highlight any other areas that you think may benefit from being more rooted in JS. Other than the general research questions, I am also looking for any advice that you may have. Launch of Worlds of Journalism Study Global Index on Journalists' Safety Room: VUB D.2.01 Promotiezaal As part of celebrations for UNESCO’s World Press Freedom Day, the Worlds of Journalism Study will officially launch its global index on journalists’ safety based on representative surveys with over 30,000 journalists in 73 countries conducted in the period 2021-2024 and data on killings from UNESCO’s Observatory of Killings. The index is hosted on the one-stop platform on journalists’ safety – https://safetyofjournalists.org – a joint initiative between the University of Liverpool and the Worlds of Journalism Study in co-operation with UNESCO. Countries are scored across four dimensions of safety: physical, psychological, digital and financial. The ranking of countries within each of the dimensions will be presented at the launch event. Data on gender differences and differences based on journalists’ perceptions of the degree of media freedom in their countries will also be presented as well as their experiences of a range of threats – from online harassment to sexual abuse to physical attacks against them. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and share their first thoughts on the results and the methodology used. The Worlds of Journalism Study is a groundbreaking cross-national academic study founded in 2010 to assess the state of journalism throughout the world. A joint effort of researchers from around the world, the project aspires to the highest standards of scientific collaboration and collective publishing. The talk will last approximately 30-40 minutes and it will be followed by Q&A. Title : The Ever-Shifting Relationship Between the Press and Digital Platforms * Summary: It has been nearly 24 years since the launch of Google News, an event that marked a pivotal moment in the evolving relationship between platform firms and news media organisations, radically transforming the political economy of journalism. Over this period, dominant platform companies like Google and Meta have diverted advertising revenues from the news industry, reshaped editorial workflows and created path dependencies in the journalism value chain. In turn, news organisations have developed strategies of resistance and negotiation, seeking to protect their autonomy and mitigate financial harm. Governments worldwide–most notably in the EU through frameworks like the Copyright Directive or the European Media Framework–are now attempting to rein in platform power and rebalance this relationship. Against this backdrop, and as generative AI adds a fresh layer of disruption, it is essential to adopt a structural and institutional lens to appreciate the complexity of this relationship. Drawing on my recent research, I will try to offer an overview of how these forces continue to shape (and reshape) the press–platform relationship and discuss what implications there may be for the political economy of journalism. * Bio: Charis Papaevangelou (he/him) is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Information Law (IViR) of the University of Amsterdam as part of the interdisciplinary research programme, Public Values in the Algorithmic Society (AlgoSoc). He is currently studying the implications of the novel EU tech governance framework for the relationship between the press and tech firms. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Toulouse 3 on the Political Economy of Platform Governance. His research interests lie at the nexus of journalism, platforms, infrastructures, and political economy. Hi all, For our first meeting of the new year, I’m happy to share the first paper of the INEQNEWS project. In this paper, Antonis and I (with input of other members of the INEQNEWS team) have been working to develop a new quantitative scale we title “News is Not Made for Me.” This scale taps at the attitude/sentiment that people may hold that journalists are not speaking to them when they write the news - whether that be because the language is too complex, the stories are irrelevant, the news moves too fast, or some related reason. This scale will hopefully contribute to the field of journalism studies (and beyond) by identifying a unique factor that influences news consumption, avoidance, knowledge, and belief in misinformation. We are still working on some minor edits to the page,r but it is nearly complete. We are aiming to send it to Journalism as our first choice journal by the end of the month. We would love feedback on: * Readability of the manuscript, particularly for those who have different research backgrounds than we employ * Internal consistency of the manuscript and justification of the research (does it make sense from top to bottom?) * More points that we can emphasize in our discussion And, of course, any other feedback you have is welcome. Dear all, This week for the NUSE meeting I’m dragging you back to pure theory, I’m afraid. This is the literature review/state of the art that I’ve been working on try to summarize everything I’ve read so far as I’ve been trying to understand where my PhD fits and where I want to take it. The expectation is that this document will be expanded a bit as I go through with my PhD, and the second section might change some, but this is what I have for now.
