Article Discussion Unit Meeting
by Daniël Hans Marinus Jurg 25 Apr '23

25 Apr '23

Good morning, everyone, As promised, attached to this email, you will find the first complete draft of the paper on Alex Jones for a special issue on ‘Cancel Culture and Digital Platforms’ for Television and New Media (you can find the call here<https://call-for-papers.sas.upenn.edu/cfp/2022/07/20/digital-platforms-and-….>). The official deadline for submission is the 30th of June, leaving quite some time to reflect and incorporate your feedback. While you are, of course, free to mention anything that strikes you, I also wanted to offer some suggestions: * What do you think about the interpretations that we draw from the findings? Anything you disagree with or results that you see as indicative of something other than what is currently mentioned? * Following the previous point, the literature review section is still in development, as it works back from the findings and seeks to combine the role of the ‘ideological entrepreneur’ with insights from ‘fandom studies’ and ‘small acts of engagement’. Is the overall line of this argumentation clear? Is there anything missing here that helps to understand the findings? * Ike suggested that perhaps a valuable angle for a broader discussion within the unit is the application of the concept ‘small acts of engagement’ (which has been anonymized for peer review). What do you think about the application of the concept to the current study, and are there certain additions that can help further theorize or illiterate the concept? * Finally, the paper has around 7000 words, and the final version, including references, cannot exceed 5000 words. Let me know if anything strikes you as redundant or repetitive or if it does not contribute to the overall article. I am looking forward to our discussion! Warm regards, Daniel

Faculty Research Day 2023: (Re)Connecting FacES – Register now! Dear colleague, We are thrilled to announce that this year’s Faculty Research Day is taking place on Friday, May 26th 2023. The Research Day will be held at Hof Ter Musschen<https://www.hoftermusschen.be/en/> (Av. Emmanuel Mounier 2, 1200 Brussels), an authentic and beautiful off-campus location easily accessible by public transportation. The central theme of the day is the ‘Societal impact of research’. With this Research Day, we aim to reconnect and get insights into each other's research, as well as provide ourjunior researchers with the opportunity to showcase their work to the faculty community. In the afternoon, we will be honoured to have Prof. Dr. Sylvia Wenmackers, philosopher of science at KU Leuven, delivering a keynote speech on the societal impact of research. Her recent interview with De Standaard (attached to this email) highlighted the idea that slow and steady science, though less sensational, can still be valuable. This event will be an excellent opportunity to explore the approaches and perspectives of researchers from the various disciplines within our faculty and to promote exchange. We encourage you to take advantage of this unique opportunity to network, learn and collaborate with your colleagues. --> Register here <https://forms.office.com/e/4STfAvLF2y> You can find the preliminary programme in the attachment. Please note that the programme is still subject to change and a final programme will be announced in April. Research seminar with Zoltán Dujisin on 'Power-Interactive Expertise as a form of Journalistic Expertise' - 17 March 2023
by Ike PICONE 20 Feb '23

20 Feb '23

Dear all, Benjamin invited us to this seminar they are organising. The scope is to foster academic exchange and discussion. If this works well, he is open to co-organise such sessions in the future together with us. A warm invitation to attend if the topic incites some interest or if you wonder how such reflection sessions could look like. I should be able to be there myself. Cheers, Ike ________________________________ From: Benjamin DE CLEEN <Benjamin.De.Cleen(a)vub.be<mailto:Benjamin.De.Cleen@vub.be>> Sent: 17 February 2023 17:47 To: Ike PICONE <Ike.Picone(a)vub.be<mailto:Ike.Picone@vub.be>> Subject: FW: ECHO research seminar with Zoltán Dujisin on 'Power-Interactive Expertise as a form of Journalistic Expertise' - 17 March 2023 Hi Ike, Hieronder de info en uitnodiging voor seminarie waarvan sprake. Stuur jij dat door naar de relevante mensen bij jou? Benjamin +++ Dear colleagues, On 17 March we are organising a research seminar with Zoltán Dujisin (FNRS - UCLouvain). Zoltán will present his work on ‘Power-Interactive Expertise as a form of Journalistic Expertise: Negotiating Journalistic Autonomy during the Catalan Crisis at El País’. This will be followed by discussion, and drinks at Pilar for those who want to join. All practical info is below. Looking forward to seeing many of you there. Best wishes, Benjamin +++ ECHO Research Seminar Power-Interactive Expertise as a form of Journalistic Expertise: Negotiating Journalistic Autonomy during the Catalan Crisis at El País Zoltán Dujisin – FNRS UCLouvain Friday 17 March 2023 Pleinlaan 5, 4th floor, Raadzaal PL5.4.21 15.00-16.30 Abstract Prestigious center-left daily El País surprisingly positioned itself as an uncompromising voice against Catalan independentism, imposing an editorial line aligned to the Spanish conservative government to a newsroom that experiences hysteresis as a result. Drawing from in-depth interviews with El País journalists, this article argues newsroom hysteresis, precipitated by the field of power’s growing encroachment on the journalistic field, helps reveal an undertheorized aspect of the journalistic profession: power-interactive expertise. The concept conveys journalists’ need to constantly negotiate limitations to their autonomy, all the while developing discursive strategies of autonomy preservation. Usually concealed and couched in technical terminology and newsroom routines, hysteresis foregrounds the ubiquity of power-interactive expertise. Bio Zoltán Dujisin is an FNRS (National Scientific Fund) Post-Doctoral Fellow based at UCLouvain. His research interests include sociology of knowledge, sociology of journalism, memory politics and political sociology. Zoltán obtained his PhD in sociology from Columbia University in New York, was a Marie Curie Leading Fellow based in Erasmus University Rotterdam and holds an MPhil in Political Science from Central European University. He also worked as a journalist for a decade, corresponding for the global news agency Inter Press Service News and leading Portuguese weekly Expresso from Ukraine, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

For your inspiration in preparation of the unit lunch
by Ike PICONE 17 Jan '23

17 Jan '23

Dear all, For our lunch on Thursday, the idea is to come to a new mission statement that can give direction to our research and with which we can all identify, and which we can publish on our page on the website. Currently, this<https://smit.vub.ac.be/research_area/news-users-strategies-engagements> is how our page looks like. We might want to come to something more broader, more encompassing of the different trajectories everyone is working on. Also, the idea is that you connect your mission statement to your core values, which you will find once more attached below. Below are also some quick inspiration/examples, and you will also find attached the powerpoint to guide our discussion. See you all then! Ike OiLab<https://oilab.eu/>: OILab is an Amsterdam-based network of interdisciplinary scholars scrutinising political subcultures on the fringe corners of the Web. It does so by conducting empirical research based on digital methods as well as qualitative theoretical research. The results are usually papers and public appearances but also take the form of more artistic projects. For write-ups of shorter projects we also maintain a blog. BEEHAIF<https://beehaif.org/>: The Belgian Evolutionary and Hybrid AI Foundation (BEEHAIF) is a Belgian consortium of artificial intelligence researchers who focus on building truly intelligent systems. Methodologically BEEHAIF researchers are united in their belief that evolutionary principles and a combination of symbolic and subsymbolic AI techniques are the key to achieving human-like artificial intelligence. Apart from fostering collaboration between researchers organising community-wide events and increasing the visibility of the evolutionary and hybrid AI research programme the BEEHAIF also plays a crucial role in supporting the development of a range of open-source software libraries. Most prominently BEEHAIF fellows are leading the development of the Babel toolkit for implementing multi-agent experiments on emergent communication and the Fluid Construction Grammar (FCG) Editor for representing and processing computational construction grammars. If you would like to connect with the BEEHAIF community feel free to reach out so that we can discuss potential collaborations.
