Here is an idea/ early draft of what will be the final paper of my PhD dissertation. As you will see, it is very much a work in progress. Since I just started working on the paper and most parts remain to be written, I have included some keywords and ideas for further structure to give you more of an idea of where I am heading. I understand that it might be hard to follow and assess as a whole at this point, so it is completely fine to just focus on the introduction.
It feels somewhat unnatural to share a draft so early in the process, but I thought I’d use this opportunity to get some feedback on whether the idea of the paper seems convincing and worth pursuing and if there perhaps are other aspects that might be relevant to consider before moving on. Any type of comments or feedback is therefore very welcome :)
To provide some context, my PhD project focuses on news use and news audiences, where I seek to understand and nuance how and why people engage with news the way they do by focusing on their experiences with news in everyday life. The other three papers in the dissertation focus on 1) how news users experience digital news subscriptions and why particularly younger people are more reluctant to pay for digital news (and what their reluctance means in terms of news engagement and interest), 2) temporal aspects of news use, focusing particularly on short digital news consumption practices (e.g., scrolling, checking, scanning or snacking news on your phone) and what these practices mean in terms of engagement, experience, skills, etc., and 3) a conceptual paper on studying news use through the concept of “media experience” to capture key insights about mediated lives in digital societies.
